The barberry family is a tall shrub with thorny gray branches. The bright yellow flowers bloom and darken in late spring, and the red berry clusters fall in autumn. Ripe berries of barberry can be used to make jams, but they are less bitter than cranberries. Both berries and bark are traditionally used. The barberry family belongs to the Berberidaceae family.
