Bilberry is a tree that grows in Europe and the British Isles. Also known as European blueberries, bilberries are small, edible blue fruits and astringent leaves. For hundreds of years, the leaves of Vaccinium myrtillus have been used in traditional European medicine for their health benefits. Blueberry leaves can be used outdoors or infused into herbal tea. Also known as "Black Hearts" in Thomas Hardy's new 1878 book, The Return of the Nation, the European blueberry is a close relative of blueberries, cranberries, and American blueberries. It grows well in acidic, moist soils in temperate and subarctic regions of the world.
